When is the next full moon?
The exact minute the Moon reaches opposition to the Sun — not a rounded date — with the sign and degree it happens in, and the same instant converted to your own clock. Computed from the Swiss Ephemeris.

Traditional names are northern-hemisphere folklore tied to the calendar month, not astronomy. The Harvest Moon is the exception: it is defined as the full moon nearest the September equinox, so it sometimes falls in October.
A second full moon inside one calendar month. It happens about every two and a half years, and the Moon does not change colour.
What a full moon actually is
It is an angle, not an appearance
Full moon is the instant the Moon reaches 180° of elongation from the Sun — exactly opposite it, as seen from Earth. That is a moment, not an evening. The disc looks full to the eye for about a day either side, which is why the date and the instant are different questions.
The sign is always opposite the Sun's
Because the Moon is opposite the Sun by definition, a full moon in Virgo happens while the Sun is in Pisces. That is why full moons track the calendar so neatly: one per solar month, in the sign opposite the season.
Two calendars can both be right
A full moon at 00:40 UTC is the previous evening in New York and the same afternoon in Sydney. Sites that publish a date and no time appear to disagree with each other for no reason. The time here is exact, in UTC, and converted for you underneath.
Full moon questions
- Why does another site give a different date?
- Almost always the timezone. The moment of fullness is the same everywhere in the world, but the local date it lands on is not — a full moon just after midnight UTC has already been the previous evening across the Americas for hours. This page gives the exact UTC instant so the conversion is yours to check rather than ours to guess.
- How long does the full moon last?
- Astronomically, no time at all: it is the instant of exact opposition. To the eye the Moon looks full for roughly a day on either side, because the lit fraction changes very slowly near 100%. If you are asking because you want to see it, the night before and the night after are both fine.
- What is a blue moon?
- The common modern definition is a second full moon inside a single calendar month, which happens roughly every two and a half years and is flagged in the table above. The older seasonal definition is the third full moon in a season that has four. Neither has anything to do with colour.
- Do the traditional names mean anything?
- They are folklore, mostly northern-hemisphere and tied to the calendar month rather than to anything the Moon is doing — a Wolf Moon is simply a January full moon. They are included because people search for them, and labelled as folklore because that is what they are.
- Which sign will the full moon be in?
- Listed above for each one, with the exact degree. The Moon is always in the sign opposite the Sun at a full moon, so it advances by roughly one sign per month.
